Tyrrel County

July 16th 1777}

Stephen Fagan came before us Justices Assigned to keep the Peace for said County & being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God deposeth & saith that on about the 24th June he met with Daniel Legate at Thomas Harrisons Orchard when Legate told him if he would swear he woud tell me ^him^ a secret to which this Deponent agreed & Legate swore him ^twice^ to he Secrecy they then parted, on Sunday the 29th June, this Deponent met with Legate at Nathaniel Everets & there he swore him again that when Legate informed him that he (Legate) informed this Deponent th was apointed to Swear people to the Association, they then Parted he then read the Constitution. Legate told him that they were to oppose a Draft of the Militia. He Likewise told him that the Association extended a Great way, & put he likewis This Deponent further saith that Jonathan Adams took the Oath before Legate & further saith not
