Albany, 17th. August 1761.

Sir,

As I make no Doubt that the Chastisement the Cherokees have received from the Troops under the Command of Colonel Grant, will have Reduced those Savages to a due Submission; and the Necessity of Accepting the protection that has since been offered them, I am in daily Expectations of the Article of Peace; Wherefore, that the Crown may be rid, as Early as possible of the heavy Expence it is at, in Supplying the Virginia & North Carolina Forces, at Such a Distance from their Frontiers, I have this day sent Directions to Colonel Byrd, to march back the Virginia Forces, So Soon as he should receive Orders for that purpose from Lieut. Governor Fauquier; and that prior to his Coming away he Should also Send home all the North Carolina Forces that may, at that time be under his Command, or on their March to Join him; And as I Shall then have no further Occasion for those Troops, You will, on their Arrival in the province, Dispose of them as You Shall be best and most for its Advantage.
