Brimage. Wm.

No. Carolina.

4th. April 1783.

Had several Offices in North Carolina—Was Judge of the Admiralty & likewise one of the Judges on the Crown Side, but had not these Offices at the time the Rebellion broke out—He was at the Bar, & the Amount of his Practice was about £700. a Year Sterling—Had 5000. Acres of his own acquiring, besides which he got a great deal of Land with his Wife, at least 5000. Acres more. He values his own Land at 20.s ⅌ Acre £5000.' Sterling & his Wife's at £10,000 Sterling—The 5000 Acres which he acquired did not cost him £500. & he had laid out nothing upon it—He bought it about 4 or 5 years before the Rebellion—has had 30 Negroes which he values at £1500—he had 400 head of Cattle upon the Plantation which is confiscated worth £250. When the Rebellion broke out, he was chosen as Member of the Provincial Congress—he was taken Prisoner in 1777. He was committed to a Dungeon where he remained two Months—after which he was banished—came to New York in April 1778. He was from thence appointed Attorney General of the Island of Bermuda—arrived in England the 4th. June last—He has a Wife & 4 Children—He says they are in Possession of her Estate it has never been confiscated—he has no Property in this Country but has some little Exportation from a Mother—

Mr. Brimage is desired to bring some Certificates of his Loyalty & the Value of his Property—He wishes to have an Office under Government.

19th. April. A Letter from Mr. J. Brimage dated 15th. April 1783. referring to Mr. Nepean, Secretary to Lord North for a Certificate of Govr. Martin—upon Enquiry of Mr. Nepean find there was a full Certificate of Govr. Martins, & that he believes Mr Brimage was a very respectable Man.

Decision. £100. pr. Ann:

This Gentleman had very great Property both real & personal—besides this has got £700. pr. Ann. by his Profession, that of the Law & we think him entitled to be paid after the Rate of £100. pr. Ann. from the 5th. January 1783.
