The Examination of David Hines James Hines Peter Stansell & Conelious Tison Junior Taken upon Oath before me James Lanier one of the Justices of the peace for the County of Pitt in the State of North Carolina this fourteenth day of January One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Eight at the House of the aforesaid James Lanier in the parrish of Saint Michaels and County aforesaid on a Certain Inquest Taken at the House of Jehu Tison on the Body of Jam Bowser a Negro Boy belonging to Joel Tison by the Request of Allen Sugg Gardian to the Said Joell Tison then and there lying Dead Viz—

The Said James Hines Jr maketh Oath that the aforesaid Jehu Tison of the County aforesaid Came to him whare he is as at work at his fathers house on Teusday the 13th— instant that he asked Mr Tison if he had got his negro boy that was Runaway (meaning) the Boy that Mr Tison had hired of Mr Allen Sugg Guardian of Joel Tison Mr Tison made Answare that he had and that he gott him at Curry Tison that when he gott him he Tyed him with his hands behind him and Tyed his Saddle on his back and drove him home before him that in driveing the boy home he was Oblidged to through the Slop and Mud Mr Hines further Says he asked Mr ^Jehu^ Tison if he did not whip the boy well when he gott him that Mr Tison Made Answare he did not Strike him a Stroke when he gott ^caught^ him but brought him home and Whipt him well—

Mr Hines then Sayd had it bean him he Should have whiptd./ him well to that Mr Tison Answared dam him he had whiptd him So he Could not work and Layd himself up Sick and that he belivied it was Deceit and without he gott Out of the house quickly would dress him Over again and Further this deponant Sayeth not—
