Biographical Description

Gibbey, an African American man residing in Brunswick County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Samuel Dwight. In March 1777 Gibbey and four other enslaved men murdered enslaver Henry Williams. The motive for the crime was not recorded. The court found Gibbey and the others guilty. While the other conspirators were burnt alive, the court sentenced Gibbey to be executed by hanging and then decapitated, perhaps indicating that Gibbey had a leadership role in the plot. Dwight later received compensation for Gibbey's death.
