Jacob, an African American man residing in Johnston County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Isaac Williams. In 1768 Jacob and two other enslaved individuals were charged with poisoning Williams. In the course of the trial, several other enslaved individuals stated that Jacob had consulted with with a conjurer and was utilizing folk medicine in hope that it would influence local enslavers' behavior. The court found Jacob guilty of poisoning and ordered his execution by hanging. Any further information regarding this individual has not been located.
