Biographical Description

John Carteret (1690-1763), 2nd Earl of Granville, was a British nobleman who served as Lord President of the Council (1751-1763), Secretary of State for the Northern Department (1742-1744), Secretary of State for the Southern Department (1721-1724), and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1724-1730). At one time, he owned most of the province of North Carolina, a tract of land known as the Granville District.
