Biographical Description

Thomas Benbury (28 November 1736-6 February 1793) was a politician and soldier from Chowan County. A justice of the peace, he also represented Chowan County at all five provincial congresses and in the North Carolina General Assembly from 1776 to 1782, serving as the speaker of that body from 1778 to 1782. He also served as a Major in the Chowan County Regiment of the North Carolina Militia from 1775 to 1779, serving as a Lt. Colonel for most of the remainder of the war. In 1777 and 1778 he signed a series of oaths of allegiance to the State of North Carolina promising to report any treasonous conspiracies that might threaten North Carolina's independence.
