Matthew Weddell was born in Scotland on August 23, 1813. He immigrated to America and met his wife, Maria Toole Clark, of a prominent North Carolina family, in New York. They married about 1840. He exchanged many letters with his niece, Margaret Eliza Cotten. He died in Tarboro, Edgecombe County, North Carolina on November 24, 1888.
