Biographical Description

Old Tony was an African American man residing either in Pasquotank Precinct, North Carolina, or somewhere along the Neuse River. He was enslaved by James Tooke. He was the older of two men named Tony enslaved by Tooke, and the pair might have been father and son. In 1715 a group of free and enslaved people of color made plans to leave Pasquotank and make their way towards the Spaniards, presumably in Florida. This group of runaways planned to find Old Tony somewhere along the Neuse River and enlist his help with navigation, which suggests that Old Tony was known for his geographical knowledge and experience. The runaways did not make it that far before being captured however. Any further information regarding this individual has not been located.
