Luke, an African American man residing in Perquimans Precinct, North Carolina, was enslaved by John Hecklefield. Luke's responsibilities as an enslaved servant took him outside the boundaries of Hecklefield's property. According to Jane Fenix's testimony in 1715, Luke canoed from Hecklefield's property on Little River to James Tooke's plantation in Pasquotank Precinct, North Carolina, seemingly without oversight. If Luke was still enslaved by Hecklefield in 1721, then ownership of Luke's labor would have passed Hecklefield's son John Hecklefield Jr. Any further information regarding this individual has not been located.
