Biographical Description

Harry, an African American man residing in Johnston County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Benjamin Shuttleworth. In 1768 Harry and two other enslaved individuals were charged with poisoning enslaver Isaac Williams, and for attempting to poison Shuttleworth. In the course of the trial, several other enslaved individuals stated that Harry had consulted with with a conjurer and was utilizing folk medicine to influence local enslavers' behavior. The court found Harry guilty of poisoning and ordered his execution by hanging. Any further information regarding this individual has not been located.
