John Francis Shaffner was born in Salem (Forsyth County), North Carolina, on July 14, 1838. Shaffner was a physician and Confederate veteran who served as a member of the board of directors for the Western North Carolina Railroad beginning in 1870. He died in Salem on September 18, 1908.
