Biographical Description

Toney, an African American man residing in Rowan County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Walter Sharp. In October 1776 Toney was indicted for burning down Sharp's house and barn, as well as killing some livestock and assaulting Jane Lackey. The motivation for Toney's actions was not recorded, nor is it clear how Toney knew Lackey. After being jailed for some time, a jury found Toney guilty of the various crimes and ordered his execution via hanging. Sharp later received compensation for the loss of Toney's labor.
