Biographical Description

William Slade (d. 1791) was a justice of the peace in Martin County. In 1777 John Wheatley testified before him about his knowledge of the Gourd Patch Conspiracy. Later in 1778 Slade was appointed the Surveyor of Lands for the county. In 1782 he continued to support the cause of American independence and received compensation from the state government for supplying it with foodstuffs.
