Biographical Description

Cush, also called Quash or Quashy, was an African American man residing in Perquimans Precinct, North Carolina. He was enslaved by Paul Palmer. Cush's name was likely an English version of the Akan name Kwesi, which was given to boys born on Sundays. Cush's name indicates he might have been have been born in Africa, or born to African-born parents. In 1720 Palmer instructed Cush to travel to Nicholas Crisp's plantation in Chowan Precinct, North Carolina, collect an enslaved man named Sambo, and bring Sambo back to the Palmer's property. Crisp later brought a lawsuit against Palmer, stating that he had used Cush to steal Sambo away from him. Cush made a deposition before the court and was put on trial for taking Sambo away. The court ordered Cush whipped as punishment, even though he had only went to collect Sambo under orders from his enslaver. Any further records regarding this individual have not been located.
