Biographical Description

Gust, an African American man residing in Halifax County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Thomas Motley. In about 1765 he testified before the local freeholders court in a case involving Rose, an enslaved woman charged with arson. Based in part on Gust's testimony, Rose was found guilty of the crime and later executed. Any further information regarding Gust has not been located.
