Dick, an African American man residing in Rowan County, North Carolina, was enslaved by John Brevard, one of the largest enslavers in the county. In December 1765 Dick attempted to kill Brevard, as well as several people also enslaved by Brevard. The motive for Dick's attack was not recorded. When authorities tried to capture Dick, he again resisted arrest with violence, but was eventually subdued. The local court found Dick guilty of attempted murder and ordered his execution via hanging. After Dick's death, Brevard ordered for Dick to be decapitated as a warning to his other enslaved people not to rebel. Brevard later received compensation from the local court for Dick's death.
