Biographical Description

Toney, an African American man residing in New Hanover County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Francis Clayton. In June 1769 he stood trial before the local freeholders court when he was charged with stealing from his enslaver. The motivation or amount of his theft was not recorded. The court found him guilty of the theft and noted that because this was Toney's second such offence, he would be executed for the crime via hanging on June 9, 1769. Any further information regarding this individual has not been located.
