George Blair was born in Scotland in about 1738 and arrived at Edenton, North Carolina by 1756. In Edenton, Blair established himself as a prosperous merchant and married Jean Johnston in April 1762. An owner of enslaved people, Blair was a member of the local freeholders court which heard cases involving enslaved people. Blair died unexpectedly in Edenton on April 18, 1772.
