Scipio, an African American man residing in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Bartholomew Evans. On the night of February 18, 1741, Scipio left the Evans property and went to a nearby plantation where he broke open a store belonging to James Gregory and stole several items. The motivation for the theft was not recorded. When questioned about the incident, Scipio confessed to the crime and returned the items. Scipio then stood trial before the local freeholders court, which found him guilty and sentenced him to be executed. The court valued Scipio's life at just £29, or about one third of the maximum allowable amount. This valuation would indicate that Scipio was either elderly at the time of his sentencing or infirm in some what that would reduced his capacity for labor. Evans was later compensated for the loss of Scipio's labor. Any further information regarding this individual has not been located.
