Tyrrell County

16th. April July 1777}

Stephen Garrett came before us Justices of Peace for the County aforesaid who being duly sworn upon the Holy Evangelists of Almighty God Deposeth & sayeth that about a Fortnight ago being at the Wheat Patch of Thomas Garretts. Capt John Garrett called him & they went along a path together where he swore him to Secrecy & then told him to get a Three Notcht Stick which he must carry to Leggett & gave him the Word be true, which this Deponent did, When& then this Deponent was taken out by said Legett under the mulberry Tree at Thos. Harrisons Senr. & showed him a paper which he called a Constitution & Read it, & swore this Deponent to stand by it In the Presence of John Garrett Senr. John Garrett Junr. Daniel Garret Thomas Garret Lemuel Hyman Charles Rhodes & John Everett & likewise gave this Deponent the second sign & Word, & said that they must have a Barrell of Powder, & that the society was not to Allow any Men to be press’d to go to the War against their Will And further this Deponent sayeth not—
