Bertie County. July 9th. 1777—

This day Michael Ward was brought before the Subscribers. On Susspisson of being Concernd in a Treasonable Conspiracy Agt. this State, who being duly sworn doth Say, Sometime past, he was Sworn to Secrecy by Absolm. Leggett who Give him some Signs &ca. ^how to^ Know the Brethren by—& telld. him he must appear before Daniel Leggett (his son) for further Instruction. That some time after went & met with John Garrett of Tyrrel County. To Peleg Belotes where he was again Sworn by Sd. Daniel Leggett (John Garrett being present when Sworn.) And was privy to the plott. That Garrett Teld this deponent he would not take the State Oath. That this Clubb was to Oppose a Draught in this province & Stand up for the King. And to protect all Diserters. & further Saith not—
