President's Office

Morganton, Nov. 18th, 1877

Dear Gov,

We struck the shaft last week with remarkable accuracy not a fraction of an inch out of direction or elevation. The air is much better and we can work now to more advantage. The drill has been ordered and is on the way. You saw no doubt the statement of two convicts being shot by a guard, they had made a key and unlocked their shackles, this shooting has already had a salutory effect, work is progressing more favorably than ever. Did you write to me in regard to the iron & cross-tie money and what was the opinion of the Attorney General? I have ordered ten 1/2 miles as you authorized me to do. Rest assured all will be done to push forward the work and with as much economy as possible.

Very Rspy & Truly Yrs

Jas. W. Wilson
