Agreeable to an Act of Assembly for Summoning a Court for the Trial, of Slaves for Felonies, Persuant to which, William Boyd, Robert Smith, Charles Bonfield Esqrs, Messrs. John Smith, Joseph Blount John Cunningham and Quintin Millen, Freeholders, was Summoned to try a Negro man Slave ^called Sam—^ for Felony, the Property of Mr James Murfree of Nansemond County in the State of Virginia.

The Court met and Proceeded to the Trial of the said Slave this 23th. Day of May 1777

The Judge-ment of the Court is that the said neg Deputy Sheriff of the said ^Country^ cause the aforesaid negro man Sam to be taken to the Publick Whiping Post and there to have Fifty Stripes well laid on his bare Back then to be discharged paying all Costs
