John Smith (d. 1784) was an owner of enslaved people in Chowan County, North Carolina that served on the local freeholders court and heard cases involving enslaved people. In 1777 and 1778 he signed two oaths swearing his allegiance to the State of North Carolina and promised to report any treasonous conspiracies that might threaten North Carolina's independence.
