My Dear Governor:
In reference to conversation had with you over the ‘phone last evening I beg to submit to you the reasons expressed by our local board for Wilson Co in Re. Julian J. Lane.
“This party has no property, his wife1 has no property, her father2 has no property but has a salary derived from his office as State Treasurer. If it became necessary he could & would take care of his daughter. She worked before her marriage & can make a living now if it be necessary for her to do so. In regard to this party having two brothers already in the service we take it (without any reflection on their patriotism) that they both have as good if not better jobs than they could get in private life.”
If after Lane goes into service his wife should lose her health or her father should lose his office or should die his application for discharge could be made and should be granted.
Our sympathies were strongly arroused in this case but we have sent many others whose families will be left in a worse fix.
We could not justify our action had we exempted him after comparing his case with many others.
I thank you for your enquiry over the ‘phone and assure you it is a pleasure to state to you the boards action & reasons therefor in this or any other matter that comes before us.
