The Deposition of Hannah Dowers being of full Age taken before me Frederick Jones Esqr: Cheif Justice of North Carolina this 27th: day of June 1720.

This Depont: Saith that on or about the 29th: day of Aprll: last being at the house of Paul Palmer of Pequimans Precinct in Company with Joannah Palmer wife of the sd: Paul the sd: Joannah ask'd this Depont: after her Husband, she Answer'd she knew not where he was but heard that he went to Little River soon after they fell into a Discourse about a Negro man Nam'd Cush belonging to the sd: Paul (who had lately been Tryed for felloniously taking away severall goods & a Negro man Nam'd Sambo belonging to Nicholass Crisp of Chowan Precinct Gent.) the sd: Johannah ask'd this Depont: where the sd: Cush was, she Answer'd that he was at her house, & had been whipp'd by Order of the Court the sd: Joannah, sayd that had he been there he should not have been whipp'd, for she would have taken the fault on herself & had rather have paid fifty Pounds, and wonder'd that her husband would suffer it when what the Negro did was by their Orders.

This Depont: farther saith that the sd: Joannah say'd that her husband did say before he went from home that he would take the fault on himself but she beleivd he was Advis'd by Somebody to the Contrary & farther saith not.
