Biographical Description
James Smith Manning was born on June 11, 1859, in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Manning served as city attorney for Durham (1886-1887), state legislator from Durham County, justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court (1909-1911), and state attorney general (1917 to 1925). He died in Raleigh on July 28, 1938.
