Biographical Description

Young Tony, an African American man residing in Pasquotank Precinct, North Carolina, was enslaved by James Tooke. He was the younger of two men named Tony enslaved by Tooke, and the pair might have been father and son. In 1715 young Tony was part a group of free and enslaved people of color made plans to leave Pasquotank and make their way towards the Spaniards, presumably in Florida. Tony, along with several others, helped steal a chest from a storehouse at the Tooke plantation. As a short period on the run, they were captured.
