Biographical Description

Phillis, an African American woman residing in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Julius Caesar Parke. On January 20, 1743, due to motivations that were not recorded, Phillis ran away or self-emancipated, possibly with the assistance of Anthony Hatch of Perquimans County. By October 1744, Phillis still has not returned to Parke's property. If Phillis was with Hatch, she was not listed as an enslaved person on his estate inventory in January 1745. Any further records regarding this individual have not been located.
