Sal, an African American man residing in Chowan County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Josiah Small. On October 18, 1782, Small's mother and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Thomas Jones took Sal from Josiah Small's property. On December 13, 1782, Small's stepson Ismael Bunch took Sal from Elizabeth Jones. No records regarding the motivations Small's various family members had in taking Sal, or whether Sal ever returned to Small have been located.
