Tom, an African American man residing in New Hanover County, North Carolina, was enslaved by John DuBois. On February 10, 1755, Tom went on trial for breaking into a house and stealing rice. The court found Tom guilty of theft and sentenced him to the punishment of castration by February 15, 1755. On February 28, 1755, Tom died from complications relating to his castration.
