Dear Sir:-

In further reply to your telegram of the 23rd inst., which was acknowledged by my wire of same date:

The North Carolina Food Conservation Commission was appointed by me early in April, its membership being as follows: T. W. Bickett, Governor, ex officio chairman; W. A. Graham, Commissioner of Agriculture; W. C. Riddick, president State College of Agriculture and Engineering; B. W. Kilgore, director of Farm Extension Work and Experiment Station; C. R. Hudson, State agent in charge of Farm Demonstration work; Mrs. Jane S. McKimmon, State agent in charge of Home Demonstration work; H. Q. Alexander, president State Farmers’ Union; John Paul Lucas, president of State Farmers’ Convention; and James H. Pou, attorney. Mr. Lucas is secretary and the active executive of the Commission.

This commission exists by Executive appointment and is without legislative authority or appropriation.

The commission has a sub-commission in each county, with a representative from each school district and with an executive committee consisting of the chairman of the board of county commissioners, superintendent of education, county farm demonstration agent, home demonstration agent and two to four others appointed by them. Through these sub commissions, commercial organizations, and other organized agencies and through the press of the State we have pushed an active and effective campaign, which has been directed up to this time toward increased production and conservation of food and feedstuffs.

This organization, which covers the State completely, and is directed by men who realize the seriousness of the situation which confronts us and are bending their best thought and energy to meet it, is at your service. Considering the short time it has been at work, remarkable results have been accomplished. In co-operation with your central organization I am sure that even greater results may be looked for.

We shall of course welcome suggestions regarding organization, activities and duties.
