Gov. T. W. Bickett,
Raleigh, N.C.,

Dear Governor:

The Local Board for Currituck County has received the papers from the Adjutant General that were sent to you concerning Ross L. White. The Adjutant General said if in our opinion, we could reopen the case. We see no cause for reopening the case, as his case was his mother depending upon his labor for support. This claim was made by Ross L. White. The Board looked in the matter before passing the decision and found it was not a case of dependance. Then we certified him to District Board, they certified him back and we sent him to Camp Jackson.

Senator Johnson and Sheriff Flora have been trying since to have him discharged from Military Service. Mrs. White had Sheriff Flora to appear before the Board in her behalf some time ago. She admitted before the Board in Sheriff Flora’s presence that she had refused $30,000.00 for the marsh property. She admitted having forty head of cows, besides hogs, sheep and ponies. She also owns a farm near Shawboro which she said she got $90.00 for cotton on said farm last year besides corn. All this property belongs to her. Senator Johnson appeared before the Board one day last week in her behalf, and admitted that she refused $25,000.00 for the same marsh property seven years ago, and said he believed the man was in good faith who wanted to buy it. His advice to the Board in such cases was, “To take the bull by the horns.” Sheriff Flora came before the Board today for the third time in Mrs. White’s behalf. He said he called on the Adjutant General one day last week concerning Ross L. White’s case but did not tell the Board of receiving any encourgement only by getting the Local Board to do something. This Board is tired of dictation from local politicians. We are playing no part in politics. If we have got to listen to their dictation, we will have all sorts of trouble through out the County. If Ross L. White is discharged from Military Service by their influence, we will have all sorts of trouble with other cases. I think this Board would be out of its line of duty to not let you know the facts in the case. Hoping you will consider this well.

Yours respectfully,

D. W. Woodhouse
Chairman of Local Board.

P.S. You will find enclosed copy of letter to The Adjutant General.
