Born May 13, 1830, in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Vance was a Confederate veteran, attorney, and politician. He served as governor of North Carolina from 1862 to 1865 and 1877 to 1879.

Zebulon Baird Vance, Jr.

Born March 22, 1860, in North Carolina. Vance was the son of former governor and United States Senator Zebulon Baird Vance. He was a Naval Academy graduate (1881) and career army officer who retired with the rank of major.

Zene Walter Faries

Born August 3, 1868, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Faries, whose name was often misspelled as "Ferris" or "Farris," was a police officer in Lincoln and Stanly Counties.

Zollicoffer Wiley Whitehead

Born April 15, 1862, in Kenansville, North Carolina. Whitehead was a journalist and editor. During the course of his career, he wrote for the Greensboro Patriot, Fayetteville Observer, Southern Lumber Journal, and the Carolina Fruit and Truckers' Journal.

Zollicoffer, Algernon Augustus

Born April 3, 1888, in Henderson, North Carolina. Zollicoffer was the bookkeeper for the Henderson and Harriet Cotton Mills in Henderson when he registered for the draft (World War I) in June 1917. During the war, he served in the United States Navy from May 1918 until May 1920.
