The Examination of Sambo als Tannihil a Negro man belonging to Mr: Crisp taken before me Fredk: Jones Esqr: Chief Justice of North Carolina the 6th: of March 1720. Being Examin'd Saith That Paul Palmer Came to him to the Plantation of Nic: Crisp call'd Garretts five severall times & ask'd him to goe home with him, but the sd: Negro refus'd to goe, then the said Palmer told him if he would note goe willingly, he would force him, after that the sd. Palmer sent his Negro Nam'd Quash with two horses to the Plantation of Frederick Jones's Esqr: fore him again & he then went with him to the sd: Palmer's house; And going there see no one, but only one Wm: Phelps who see him with the rugg & two shirts he now has with him. When he gott to Palmer's house Palmer said he should came to no harm but would Defend him from all Danger of being Punish'd, by coming a way from Mr. Crisp.

About 3 days after he went down to Curytuk with the sd: Palmers his wife & Susanah Old, & Tarryed there three days & then came back again. And some time after being at Mrs: Lakers was apprehended & taken by Chas: Wilkins who went with him to Palmers he then went with him to Mrs: Palmers in her Chamber & she Order'd him to gett out at the window & make his Escape; About an hour after Chas: Wilkins went away, they sent for him & sent him with Mrs: Lakers to her house who Lock'd him up in a room 3 days & there fed him after that they sent him over to a Plantation neare Jona: Phelps's & there sent him Victualls in a Pocoson by their Negro Jack, where he was kept about a fortnight in that maner, & then he was sent for home & Employ'd about the Plantation, & when they heard any one was after him they hid him & kept him Close up, & told him if any one should Catch him he would be hang'd, & at the time he was not in the sd. Pocoson he was at work at the Plantation of the sd Palmers where we was seen by Davd: Lewelin Jno: Old & his wife Jonathan Evans Geo: Lumley & many others; And upon some threatening words from sd: Palmer he went away on Wednesday the 1st. Inst down into Durant's neck where he was apprehended by George Durant.
